St. Andrews vs. Under 19s (05/02/17)
Match report from our Under 19s’ great 3-2 win last weekend (05/02/17) continuing their unbeaten streak in 2017:
After last week’s sublime 3-1 cup win in the Norfolk Junior Sunday Cup, Rockland Under 19s were in high spirits as they had a semi-final awaiting them on the 19th February at Green Lane, Rocklands and the lads were hungry for another win, this time in league action.
The squad for the day, who turned up in their red and black RUFC jackets sponsored by KD Roofing, was:
GK: J. Argent
RB: L. Hutchinson
CB: C. Crabb
CB: L. Custance
LB: J. Thompson (c)
RM: J. Overton
CM: R. Scott
CM: E. Ford
LM: K. Holmes
ST: C. Lane
ST: D. Shurey
It was a glorious Sunday morning at St. Andrews with the warm sun shining on a muddy, choppy and slightly sloped St. Andrews pitch. The coin toss was won by captain J. Thompson of Rockland.
The game had kicked off, and both teams were up for the contest. Rockland were hungry and linking up as a team from the off, which was very positive from the lads.
We were only 10 minutes in and we had our first goal! This came from Reserves striker D. Shurey which was fed through by R. Scott; Shurey came running in from the near corner and seemed to lob the St. Andrews keeper.. 1-0 to Rockland!
Rockland were looking hungry and determined as ever to build on their lead. E. Ford in the centre was having a terrific game so far with no-nonsense tackles, quick passing and tireless running as well as feeding the strikers and dropping back to help his defence throughout… this was on the back of a school match the day before in which Ford had played 90 minutes worth we hear from Rocklands Youth chairman P. Ford!
Another player who was working tirelessly (and this wasn’t unusual) was winger J. Overton who would pace up and down the wing constantly helping his full-back on the same side (L. Hutchinson) and would then counter attack beating his full-back opponent. Overton had a good selection of golden chances throughout the match but just couldn’t finish to add to the score line; on one occasion, Overton managed to go as far as the 6 yard box in the St. Andrews goal area however he couldn’t get the ball out of his feet at the crucial moment and eventually the ball was cleared – to the frustration of Overton.
Around the 30th minute, the home side managed to equalise from a poorly defended corner from Rockland.
Just before half time was approaching, St. Andrews managed to take the lead with a shot from the right hand side to make it 2-1; this just spurred Rockland on to keep pressing and react with an equaliser that was not too long a wait..

After a positive team talk and spirits still at a high, the second half had kicked off with Rockland on a mission to re-instate their lead in the match.
As mentioned earlier the pitch was choppy and muddy, meaning the ball would not roll smoothly in any form along the pitch; with this in mind Rockland did extremely well controlling the ball throughout the match as well as passing and crossing as a team. A variety of chances were developed, especially in the second half by the lads in the red and black kit sponsored by Cisco.
The 60th minute was approaching and Rockland were on the attack with left-winger E. Clarke charging the ball forward, the ball was then placed into striker C. Lane’s feet who controlled well and within the 10 yard line he shot with a curling finessed effort to beat the St. Andrews keeper by equalising! A good finish by Lane with everyone on and off the pitch delighted.. the lads didn’t deserve to be losing! It was now 2-2.. game on!
20 minutes went by and chances were created by both teams pushing for a winner and hoping not to settle for a point. Rockland were the most persistent and in the last 10 minutes of the match our talented Under 19s were on the attack again, this time on the right side of midfield with J. Overton combining well with striker D. Shurey who was causing the threat to the home side driving the ball to the opposition. Shurey eventually crossed the ball with great accuracy to his strike partner C. Lane who headered the ball well and beat the goalkeeper to put the lads in red and black ahead! 3-2! Some wild celebrations on the side-lines from the Rockland support.
St. Andrews tried to rescue a point by pushing until the end however Rockland saw the game out in good fashion… 3 points earned!
2 St. Andrews U19s
3 Rockland United U19s
10th: D. Shurey
60th: C. Lane
80th: C. Lane
Another win for Rockland in the league and it was especially deserving after trailing 2-1 against a good St. Andrews side who beat us 5-3 earlier this season at Green Lane. Well done chaps… keep this form going! *cough* semi-final week after next *cough*
Next up, we host a good Old Catton U19s side at Green Lane in league action again... come on lads!
